I do not trust the algorithm's suggestions for what to watch for a second, on any of the streaming platforms we have in the family.
But I do trust critics, engaged people and aggregated lists — if you strip out all the films that got millions of votes simply because so many people have seen them. Film of the day serves up an overlooked film in Slack, and here, based on what others think of it. It just never got the same attention as the others.
The sources are TMDB for catalogue and audience ratings, Rotten Tomatoes via OMDb for the critics, Kjell Häglund's newsletter TV Dags, and my own archive of tips saved in Notion. The viewing history lives there too, so nothing is suggested twice.
The thresholds are simple: rating at least 7.0, at least 500 votes, Rotten Tomatoes at least 70. Then broad, heavily voted titles are weighted down — they are not the ones I am missing. And only what can actually be watched on the services we pay for makes the cut.
